Polynesian settlement of New Zealand and the impacts of volcanism on early Maori society: an update

چکیده
Models of settlement Various lines of evidence indicate that the ‘homeland’, or Hawaiiki, of the early Polynesian settlers of Aotearoa was eastern Polynesia (e.g. see Sutton, 1994; Howe, 2003). Establishing the timing of settlement has been problematic, however. The most recent and reliable evidence, both from archaeological and natural sites, points consistently to initial settlement between c. 1250–1300 AD (called the late settlement model). Wilmshurst et al. (2008) suggested a settlement date of c. 1280 AD (see below). The application of tephrochronology to the issue is well established (Newnham et al., 1998; Lowe et al., 2000; Lowe and Newnham, 2004). The Kaharoa Tephra was erupted from Mt Tarawera in winter of 1314 12 AD, as determined from the wiggle-match dating of a log of celery pine (tanekaha, Phyllocladus spp.) killed in the eruption (Hogg et al., 2003). It provides a key marker enabling both archaeological and palaeoenvironmental sites which record the earliest forest clearances accompanying settlement to be dated. The impacts on soils of Polynesian deforestation by burning are noted in a short article below (Lowe and McDaniel, this volume).

Early Maori settlement impacts in northern coastal Taranaki, New Zealand
Pollen and charcoal analyses of sediments from northern coastal Taranaki, New Zealand, show that Maori settlement impacts on the vegetation began with the burning of tall coastal forest in the mid-17th century. Forest was replaced with a fern-shrubland, and small wetlands expanded with changing hydrological conditions. This forest clearance was much later than in most regions of the country, wh...

The role of major gene and multifactorial inheritance in the aetiology of club foot in the New Zealand Polynesian population was studied using 287 New Zealand Maori and Pacific club foot families. The club foot family data were analysed by complex segregation analysis under the mixed model using the computer program POINTER. This analysis shows that the best genetic model for club foot in this ...
متن کاملOrigin and timing of New Zealand's earliest domestic chickens: Polynesian commensals or European introductions?
Human settlers transported chickens (Gallus gallus domesticus) to most East Polynesian archipelagos between AD 1000 and 1300; however, it has long been assumed that New Zealand was an exception. Despite the fact that chicken bones have been recovered from localities of early archaeological middens in New Zealand, their age and genetic relationships have never been critically assessed. Here, we ...

New Zealand Journal of Ecology (1995) 19(2): 175-194 ©New Zealand Ecological Society temperatures among the most extreme recorded in New Zealand (Maunder, 1965). The Central Otago region has a complex history of disturbance. Post-glacial forest may never have extended to the drier basins of Central Otago, and the establishment of grassland, possibly through natural fires, preceded human settlem...

OBJECTIVE Type 2 diabetes is more prevalent in the indigenous Polynesian population of New Zealand (Maori) than in Europeans. The aim of this study was to determine whether insulin resistance in Maori psychiatric patients was associated with antipsychotic treatment and to investigate the mechanism of an association. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS Thirty adult Maori psychiatric patients receiving...
